THAT'S NOT FOR SALE

Run a 24-hour pawn shop where the customers are monsters. Haggle with Bigfoot. Read the paper to learn which monster isn't a costume. Hit the lockdown button, last 30 seconds, and punch the money out of every real monster inside before the Little Men in Black take them away. And when the vampire asks about the stake: that's not for sale.

The night shift

Four rules. Zero of them help.

Buy low, sell at retail, make rent. Most of the monsters in line are con-goers in costume from the Monster Con across the street. One of each kind is real. The lockdown button is how it becomes somebody else's problem.

In-game: Bigfoot sells a blurry photo. The deal card shows three buttons: Lowball, Fair offer, Sweeten the deal. CAM 01 · COUNTER
Rule 01 · Haggle

Never lowball a Sewer Gator.

Three buttons: Lowball, Fair offer, Sweeten the deal. A tag over every customer says whether they are selling or buying, before they reach the till. Every customer has a temper. Push the wrong one too far and he grabs a fistful of your drawer and runs for the door. There's a button for that too: one at every register.

In-game: the doors are locked, a real monster has dropped the act, and the lockdown clock is counting down from 30. CAM 03 · LOCKDOWN
Rule 02 · Lock down

Only lock the doors on the real one.

The paper says how to spot the real monster, and the one thing it's scared of this game. Hit a lockdown button (every register has one, and so does the security booth): the doors lock for 30 seconds, and every real monster inside drops the act, turns red and comes for you, each in its own way. A shape on the floor shows where every strike will land, and the chase is a stamina duel, so keep a shelf between you (hold C to crouch behind it). Punch it, bat it, golf-club it, tase it, spray it or give it both barrels: every hit pays, and the better the weapon, the more it pays. Nobody has health, only a knockdown gauge. Still standing at zero? A pair of Little Men in Black takes each monster away for good, and each arrest pays. (Lock in a guy in a foam suit and Officer Duggan writes you a fine.)

In-game: Count Vlad asks for the shoes. THAT'S NOT FOR SALE. CAM 02 · REGISTER
Rule 03 · Refuse

Some things are not for sale.

Somebody always wants the one thing you need: the thing a monster is scared of, your only bat, or whatever Gnomez's guy is paying for. Hold N to refuse. They take it personally. You keep it.

In-game: the haunted doll hums on the shelf. A banner counts down: grab it. CAM 05 · SHELF A
Rule 04 · Offload

If it's cursed, sell it to someone you don't like.

Bought a haunted doll? When she starts humming, grab her, or every shelf ends up on the floor. Then sell her to the Raccoons in a Trench Coat. Now there's a fourth raccoon. It stares.

Your business partner

Meet Gnomez.

A homeless garden gnome lives in a box behind your counter, insists he's your business partner, and really wants to be an elf. The traffic cone is a pretend elf hat. The mustache is all his. He practices by "restocking" your best stuff onto the shelves, so you'll be telling customers it's not for sale.

"It was so pretty on the shelf."

Gnomez, business partner (self-appointed), elf (pending)
  • Gives hints. Some of them are right.
  • Applied to the North Pole. Under "height" he wrote "yes."
  • His mustache gets fancier every time the shop moves up.

How co-op works

From back alley to the Grand Exchange

Get every kind of monster arrested here. Then earn the move to a bigger shop.

Arrest every kind of monster that visits your shop and the union gives you an award: from then on you can pay the fee and move up on any day. At the new place every monster is back, and you catch them all again. What you learned about them stays with you. Pay rent every week or get evicted down a rung. Five storefronts, each a much bigger room than the last: more aisles to hide behind, worse things to hide from. Gnomez's mustache keeps up.
